Just One Day

2 Youth at Central AZYLF 2023

Central Region AZYLF 2023 – Chandler, AZ

The Central Region Arizona Youth Leadership Forum (AZYLF) started with shuffling food and technology. With hushed conversations, we worked to get everything organized. We eagerly awaited participants, some arriving as early as facilitators. The newly awake sun provided a warm reminder of what connected us. We chatted with participants as they headed in, all grabbing coffee and breakfast. The presentations began, valuable information broken up with light laughs and discussions. A crucial point was lunchtime and a moment when the collective support and collaboration shone through. Extended hands offered assistance and ensured that everyone was taken care of. The sense of community and togetherness was palpable as we shared meals and exchanged stories, building connections that would last beyond the event. With a few breaks, the afternoon flew by. It seemed like seconds before participants left for the day. It became an instinct to wish well to everyone that filled the day with disabled joy, with its layers of pain and beauty.

Summer 2023:

We had a total of three AZYLF summer conferences this year. The first two were in Yuma and Chandler for youth and young adults who have a disability. And we had one AZYLF conference for youth and young adults who identify as being Indigenous who do and do not have a disability in Tsaile.

Why I wrote this:

I wrote this piece in hopes of reiterating the merit of AZYLF and what it can do for marginalized communities. We strive to streamline resources and information to the public that we serve.

What is AZYLF:

AZYLF is where youth or young adults focus on personal leadership, self and systems advocacy, disability history, and culture. We provide additional opportunities following AZYLF graduation, such as Statewide Conference designed to enhance leadership development, career exploration, and prepare youth and young adults to serve as Peer Facilitators, Leaders, and Navigators.

Who is it for:

AZYLF is for youth and young adults who are ages 14-29 and who identify as being part of the following communities: Disability, Indigenous and LGBTQ2+.

Our desire is to continue to make AZYLF accessible to all Arizona youth. Entities and communities who are interested in supporting AZYLF are encouraged to contact admin@diverseabilityincorporated.org to discuss the possibilities. Visit us to learn more here: www.diverseabilityincorporated.org.
