Empowering Students through Peer Education

Diverse Ability Incorporated’s peer-based programs for schools empower students who have disabilities and other diversities as they transition to adulthood. Our trained Arizona Young Adult Leaders educate, motivate, and equip students through hands-on learning opportunities. We aim to build upon students’ strengths, promote independence, and help them achieve the life they want to lead.

Diverse Ability Incorporated can customize its programs to meet your school and students’ needs. Contact us to learn how we can work together to provide your students with quality, peer-based education.

We are proud to offer the following peer-based programs for schools:

Self-Determination and Self-Advocacy Workshop

Diverse Ability Incorporated’s Arizona Young Adult Leaders will help students discover what self-determination and self-advocacy can look like in their lives through engaging personal stories, videos, scenarios, and discussion. During this presentation, students will explore their unique skills and explore opportunities to practice self-determination and self-advocacy in their lives. Students will also receive a brief overview of the person-centered planning process and learn how it can help them set goals for their future and achieve the life they want to lead.

This presentation serves as an introduction to the person-centered planning process. If the school chooses, our team of Young Adult Leaders can then facilitate this process for students according to the school’s preferred schedule.

Peer-Based, Person-Centered Planning

A person-centered plan is an evolving document created by the student with input from their chosen supporters. It aims to empower the student to express self-determination, practice self-advocacy, and communicate their preferences and goals to their supporters and the systems involved in their lives.

Developing a person-centered plan consists of two steps: Discovery and Goal Setting.

Our Young Adult Leaders work closely with students during the Discovery process to help them identify their strengths, skills, likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, opportunities, obstacles, doubts, and concerns. Together, they use this information in the Goal-Setting process to create an action plan. This plan outlines the student’s goals, identifies available and needed resources, establishes appropriate timelines, and assigns responsibilities for implementation.

Developing a person-centered plan with a student takes approximately ten hours, but this can vary depending on the group size.
